Diary of a song – session 6 (The last session)

Introduction

I’ve decided to do a diary of a song I’ve been working on, I thought I would write down what I need to do to get the song from a few scrappy ideas in my head, to guitar, to vocals, to recording, mixing, and mastering.

I thought it would be nice to give an idea of how I approach things generally, although things never seem to be the same for each song as each song presents it’s own challenges.

Previous Sessions (if you missed them…)
Session 1 Time spent: 3 hours
Session 2 Time spent: 3 hours
Session 3 Time spent: 2 hours
Session 4 Time spent: 2 hours
Session 5 Time spent: 2 hours

Anyway onto….

Session 6

Review
Not a lot has changed for this version except to add a reverse cymbal prior to the bridge.

Changes
Mastering is the next step – so needed to:

– Check volumes for overload on the peaks
– Trim start and end audio
– Check normalisation levels
– Test mix on different speakers

This didn’t take to long, about an hour.

Summary
Finished (probably) – unless I have any brainwaves

Here is the complete set of lyrics:

When You’re Gone You’re Gone

v1
You’ve got a lot of things to do
You’ve got a lot on your mind
But you can’t find the money
And you can’t find the time

v2
You keep pushing pushing pushing
Just to keep on track
You’ve got to keep moving so you don’t fall back

v3
Doing everything you can just to stick to the plan
You’re not doing what you want
Just doing what you can

v4
You keep taking taking taking so you stay upright
But you’re tired all day
And can’t sleep at night

Chorus 1
Man you’re gonna wonder
Where it all went wrong
When you’re gone you’re gone

Chorus 2
Man you’re gonna wonder
Where it all went wrong
When you’re gone you’re gone

Then you’re gonna look back
And see what you’ve become
When you’re gone you’re gone

Chorus 3
Man you’re gonna wonder
Where it all went wrong
When you’re gone you’re gone

Man you’re gonna wonder
And see what you have done
When you’re gone you’re gone

Bridge
Don’t you know
They’re dying to know
Who am I
To tell you why
When don’t you know

And here is the complete mastered version:

I have sneaked this onto here without telling anyone (shush….) – I may announce it later (I may withdraw it later) but for frequent visitors I have posted the full track as a reward for your patience.
